When does Ramadan end?

The last fast of 1448 AH is kept on 9 March 2027, the 30th day of the month. Fasting began on 8 February 2027, so the month runs 30 days from first fast to last.

Maghrib on that final day closes Ramadan and opens Syawal in the same instant. The night that follows is the night of Raya, and no fast is kept the next morning.

Is 1 Syawal the same as Hari Raya Aidilfitri?

1 Syawal is the date. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is what is observed on it. The first of Syawal is the first day of the tenth Hijri month, and Aidilfitri is the festival Muslims keep on that day, so the two always share a date without being the same kind of thing.

Why does the date depend on whether Ramadan runs 29 or 30 days?

A Hijri month is 29 or 30 days, never 31 and never 28. Which one it is cannot be settled in advance, because it depends on the new crescent on the 29th evening. The two outcomes are listed below.

1. The crescent clears the criterion on the 29th evening. The month has 29 days, and the next day is 1 Syawal.
2. It does not. Ramadan is rounded out to 30 days through istikmal, and 1 Syawal falls one day later.

This is the same mechanism that decides when Ramadan begins, applied at the other end of the month, and it is set out in full in how the start of Ramadan is decided. For 1448 AH the JAKIM takwim runs Ramadan 30 days, which is why Raya lands on 10 March 2027 rather than the day before.

Why do some calendars give a different day?

Because they answer the 29-or-30 question differently, and they answer it in advance. For 1448 AH the published calendars split as follows.

The start date is identical across all of them. The disagreement is entirely about the length of the month, and it produces a one day gap at Raya.

One caution about reading that table. Umm al-Qura is a precomputed calendar, and the Saudi authorities routinely adjust Ramadan and Syawal after sighting reports come in. So the rows above are what each calendar prints, not a forecast of what each country will announce.

When does Ramadan end in each country?

Only some authorities publish 1 Syawal this far ahead. Those that do are listed below, with their own dates rather than a single date applied to everyone.

Where a country shows no date, no date has been sourced from its authority. It is left blank on purpose. Carrying Malaysia's date across would make the table look complete while saying something no authority has said.

Who announces the end of Ramadan?

The same authority that announces its beginning, country by country. The announcement follows the 29th evening of Ramadan, not a calendar printed a year earlier.

The authority column in the table above names the body for each country. In Malaysia the declaration is made by the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal, by the same route that opens the month.

Can the date still change?

Yes. Every date on this page is a projection until an authority announces it, and the announcement comes only after the 29th evening of Ramadan. A printed takwim is a calculation, and calculation is usually right, but it does not bind. That is true of the JAKIM takwim and it is equally true of Umm al-Qura, which its own authorities revise after sighting reports.
