Questions people ask

When does Ramadan 2027 start?

The first fast is projected for Monday, 8 February 2027 in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and 11 others. The month itself begins at Maghrib the evening before, on 7 February 2027, because a day in the Islamic calendar turns at sunset. No authority has announced it yet, so the date is a calculation. The last confirmed year was 1447 AH on 19 February 2026.

Why do some countries start on different days?

Each country declares its own start through its religious authority, which is JAKIM in Malaysia, MUIS in Singapore, MUIB in Brunei, and its own authority in each of the other countries in the table above. They can differ when the new crescent sits at the edge of visibility, because a sighting made in one place may not be made in another.

How is the start date decided?

Two things. Calculation, or hisab, predicts where the new moon will be, and sighting, or rukyah, confirms it when trained observers watch for the crescent on the evening the month could begin. The authority then announces the result. That is why a date printed a year ahead stays a projection until it is announced.

When does Ramadan end?

Ramadan ends once its 29th or 30th day is completed, and the next day is 1 Syawal, the date Hari Raya Aidilfitri is observed. Which of the two it is depends on the new crescent on the 29th evening, which is why different calendars can give dates a day apart.

Why does Ramadan move earlier every year?

The Hijri calendar follows the moon. Twelve lunar months run about 354 days against the Gregorian year of 365, so Ramadan arrives roughly 11 days earlier each year.

Is the countdown accurate for my city?

The date is national. The Maghrib time used is the one for the capital, so sunset where you are may differ by a few minutes. For prayer times zone by zone, use your own authority published schedule.
